Gore Galore by Brad Harris, Movie Bears Podcast
Oh October, how we’ve missed you! Returned are our comfiest hoodies, our Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and our insatiable sweet teeth – why, hello there orange cream-filled Oreos! But just as fall brings a cooler clime and candy time, so too does October herald the return of spooky flicks meant to shock your socks and scream your queens. While none of this year’s horror offerings will win any Academy love – that is, after all, why scary movies have their own award ceremonies – there are definitely a few coming out that are sure to satisfy your craving for the seasonal occult. Read on for the Movie Bears Podcast’s recommendations for this year’s potential Halloween hits…
Fans of last year’s ‘The Conjuring’ will be happy to see its prequel hitting theaters this month. ‘Annabelle’ – releasing October 3rd – tells the origin story of the darkling doll seen in the film’s predecessor. When Satanic cultists invade the home of Johnny and Mia Gordon, they conjure something sinister: a malevolent entity that possesses a porcelain doll named Annabelle – a recent gift from Johnny to his expectant wife. With their attack thwarted, the cultists flee but not before the doll is left behind to haunt the Gordons to the limits of their sanity. While we know Annabelle eventually finds her way into the hands of Ed and Lorraine Warren – the famed ghostbusters from ‘The Conjuring’ – this film recounts the based-on-a-true-story events leading up to Annabelle’s handoff.

October wouldn’t be complete without vampires and bats, right? Well, ‘Dracula Untold’ serves up a healthy dose of both as the origin story of our favorite Transylvanian is revealed. To save his son from an invading army hell-bent on enslaving children, Vlad Tepes must eschew conventional battle tactics and embrace darkness itself to win the day. Willingly becoming the vampiric Dracula, the hero-turned-monster uses his newfound power in an attempt to save all he holds dear. But will his efforts yield salvation or ruin for those he loves? Starring Luke Evans – who gives a disturbingly Jon Snow-esque performance – ‘Dracula Untold’ opens on October 10th.
In 2012, ‘The ABCs of Death’ brought 26 horrendous ways to die to the silver screen. Written and directed by 26 different teams, the anthology of gory shorts proved quite popular and now studio Magnet Releasing is looking to make it a gruesome twosome with the release of ‘ABCs of Death 2.’ In this follow up film, 26 new ways to day are showcased, with shorts ranging from live action to animation and stop-motion to CGI. With each death belonging to a specific letter of the alphabet, the movie is a rather horrific way of learning one’s letters, so best to let the kids stick to ‘Sesame Street’ on this one. ‘ABCs of Death 2’ hits video-on-demand services on October 2nd but will also see a limited release in theaters on October 31st.
